How it all began

History of Highland Fence Company

In 2017, Stuart decided to leave the rat race, embrace his passion, and work for himself. Armed with a pickup truck and a back seat full of tools, he worked hard to build a business. In late 2018, Stuart’s wife, Melissa McNeal, joined him on the job site, and for two years, the two of them worked hard to make backyard dreams a reality for families all across Baton Rouge. What started out as a self-employed endeavor called LAC Woodworking, is now the growing, thriving, small business, Highland Fence Co. Stuart and Melissa are now blessed to have a crew who are polite, hardworking, and do exceptional quality work, allowing them to focus on customer service, sales, and company growth.

Are you licensed and insured?

We are insured and bonded! The state of Louisiana does not require a license for a job under $7,500.

How do you set your posts?

We set our posts 8 Feet apart. Every post is set a minimum of 2 feet deep, and gets a minimum of 50lbs of concrete per post footing.

Do you charge for estimates?

No! The first estimate is free!

Do I need to be worried about my utility lines?

Highland Fence Co will facilitate marking the utilities at the start of the project so you have nothing to worry about.

What do you do with the old fence?

Our demolition price includes the removal of the old fence, as well as hauling it off of your property and properly disposing of it. Once a company demolishes a fence, it is considered commercial waste, and is illegal to stack by the street under most circumstances. We do not leave it stacked in your yard or in front of your house for any great length of time.

Do you screw or nail the boards?

We use 3 inch premium outdoor grade screws to attach the 2x4 runners to the posts. We use high quality galvanized ring shank nails to attach the fence boards to the 2x4 runners.

Do you use treated lumber?

Yes, our lumber is treated and rated for outdoor use, with the exception of cedar. Cedar naturally resists rot, and is a premium material option for outdoor wood structures

Do you use 2 or 3 runners?

Our standard for a 6ft privacy fence is to use 3 runners. However, in the past, we have built fences with 2 runners upon request to help customers meet budget constraints.

Do you dig up old posts?

It is not standard practice, except for where necessary. However, it is something we can do for an additional labor fee.
